40th Anniversary Annual Meeting Featured Travis Roy!

40th Anniversary Fidelity House

Annual Meeting and Breakfast

Featured Special Guest:

 Travis Roy

Travis Roy first put on ice skates when he was just 20 months old. As years passed, his love for the game of hockey quickly became a passion. In the fall of 1995 Roy accomplished one of his dream goals by earning a hockey scholarship to Boston University. At twenty-years of age he entered into his first collegiate hockey game. Eleven seconds into his first shift, his life changed forever as he crashed into the boards and cracked his fourth and fifth cervical vertebra, paralyzing him from the neck down.

Despite this ill twist of fate, Roy has continued to persevere and defy the odds. With an intense rehabilitation regime, he has regained some movement in his right arm. While coming to grips with his life as a quadriplegic, he returned to Boston University less than a year after his accident. Four years later, he graduated with a degree in public relations from Boston University’s prestigious College of Communication. In the storied history of BU Terriers hockey, Roy’s #24 is the only jersey to have been retired.

Here are a few takeaways from Travis’ presentation:

  • Being your best at your profession, should always be one of your primary motivating factors.
  • Professional challenges, chosen or not, should be viewed as new opportunities.
  • Your ability to find solutions in times of adversity, are defining moments.
  • Staying motivated in your job, requires setting goals and implementing incentives.
  • Attitude is about perspective… how you look at things, more importantly, how you choose to look at things.

40th Anniversary Fidelity House Picnic- What a Great Day!

Sponsored By

More than 350 members of the Fidelity House (FHHS) community: individuals, families, volunteers and staff, gathered together on a beautiful summer day to celebrate 40 exceptional years of service and growth in the Merrimack Valley.

Our 40th anniversary picnic and barbecue was generously sponsored by our corporate partner Sapphire Technologies/Randstad.  About 20 volunteers in blue Randstad shirts organized activities designed to accommodate those with and without disabilities including whiffle ball, limbo, mini-golf, face painting, Frisbee decorating, bean bag toss, volleyball and more.  A DJ contributed to the fun with festive dance music and he really got folks up off their feet! While those wanting to cool off could enjoy swimming or simply floating in the lovely pool.  All attendees received goodie bags from Sapphire as well as free raffle tickets for a chance at some terrific prizes.

The Rolling Ridge Center in North Andover provided a wonderful venue and a delicious spread for all to enjoy.  Everyone munched on hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, salads and more and those with a sweet tooth were delighted by the large shared dessert table filled to overflowing with individual and family contributions as well as the fabulous 40th anniversary cake!

From beginning to end, everything ran smoothly. Everyone enjoyed being outside on a beautiful sun-shining day. There was shade, sun and picnic tables where groups gathered, relaxed and reminisced about past anniversary events and milestones at Fidelity House.  One mother expressed it this way “I am so happy to be here for this wonderful day. Over the years Fidelity House has done so much to support me, my son and our whole family.  But having a day like this, where we can be together having fun as a regular family, a day where my son is accepted for who he is makes all the difference.  This is a wonderful day!” The day was still filled with smiles and laughter as the buses, vans and cars pulled in, ready to take people home.

Since 1971 Fidelity House Human Services headquartered in Lawrence, MA has offered individuals with developmental disabilities opportunities and supports to live rich and full lives within their own communities.  Established as a non profit agency 40 years ago in response to advocacy efforts by local families, we bought and renovated our first home on Haverhill St in 1972.  Since that day our goals have been the same: to offer supports and services in the three complementary areas necessary to empower individuals with disabilities to live a better life –family, home and community.

Today, Fidelity House serves more than 600 adults and children with developmental disabilities and their families throughout the Merrimack Valley. We manage 18 staffed homes with a 19th is now being built in Haverhill. Our homes are located in Lawrence, Methuen, Andover, and Georgetown as well as in Haverhill.

Challenge and Support

From day hikes and backpacking, to rock climbing and kayaking; Waypoint Adventure challenges its clients to become more knowledgeable and experienced in accessing  nature and all it has to offer.

Thanks to a donation from the John F. Wallace Trust, Fidelity House was able to partner with Waypoint to offer monthly adventure programs to a number of our adult  individuals willing to challenge themselves through outdoor adventure.  Fidelity House staff worked with Dan Minnich and Adam Combs – the staff and founders of Waypoint to design fully accessible adventure programs that inspire teamwork, help develop physical and social skills and encourage personal challenge and growth.

Dan and Adam bring to all their participants, including the Fidelity House team, many years of experience in both outdoor education and in adaptive recreation.  They allow individuals with developmental and other disabilities to experience the joys and rigors of rock climbing, hiking, kayaking and more. Through their participation, the Fidelity House individuals have developed many talents and have turned initial fear into joy and have found freedom in personal transformation.

After an initial team building meeting, the group chose the themes of challenge and support for their experience. The first adventure program was held this spring and featured indoor rock climbing. This program was a good way to kick off the Waypoint experience because our team was challenged to push themselves and reach new personal goals but in a safe and controlled environment. The program was a great success, as were the hiking and outdoor rock climbing trips that followed.  A kayaking trip and a final hike will end the season.  Future plans include more programming for adults as well as a new program designed for teens.

Waypoint programs foster success. Our team learned to engage in an unfamiliar environment, make new friends, and build confidence and self-esteem by simply making the attempt to complete the challenge. “I was so scared… I couldn’t believe I did it, but I made it all the way to the top!” Jacinto said after accomplishing the rock wall challenge. Luis stated that “I feel more independent and have more confidence within myself.”

Dan’s notes from the Waypoint –Fidelity House hike:Fidelity House Hike with Waypoint

“We stopped the group half way into our trek through the Harold Parker State Forest in order to read Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken.” It was a perfect location for us to read it. The path in front of us literally forked with one of the paths quickly disappearing into the woods, and showing no continuance on the map either.  Jeff, from Fidelity House, volunteered to read the poem. We listened while he read, “And looked down one as far as I could, to where it bent in the undergrowth… Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” We left the decision to the group and after several minutes of deliberation they chose the path which quickly disappeared. Later that day, while sitting on a rock overlooking a pond just a short distance from where we knew we would find our vans, we talked about the importance of facing challenge in our lives. Several of the men opened up and shared personal insights about challenging experiences in their lives and what those events had taught them. We closed the day recapping our two goals for the entire series, Challenge and Support, and each man had an opportunity to share how they saw our group accomplish these goals during that program.”

Fidelity House Celebrates Opening of 18th New Home

Patti and Larry at the Open House

Fidelity House Human Services (FHHS) recently celebrated the opening of their second group home in Haverhill, bringing the total number of staffed homes accomodating individuals with developmental disabilties in the Merrimack Valley to a total of 18.  Built from the ground up, this beautiful home supports the new lifestyles of its residents: Larry, Donna, Andy, Joe and Suzy. The residents were joined by family, friends and staff members  to celebrate this milestone in their lives and enjoyed showing off their their new rooms. All their rooms were colorfully decorated with posters, wall decorations and more.  Larry, in particular, was eager to welcome everyone stating “Before I moved to Fidelity House I watched a lot of tv, but now I’m too busy; we’re always having fun doing something else!”

Front View of House

The house looked amazing, featuring a large kitchen, comfortable living room and a study with a great view of the front lawn. The sun shone over the patio where people relaxed and enjoyed the gorgeous view from the home’s location high upon the hill.  The house is fully accessible to allow all the residents maximum independence.

Download Sponsorship Brochure Here!

We will be celebrating our 40th anniversary all year with exciting milestone events including our golf tournament in September and the opening of our 19th home in October. This beautiful, fully accessible home, designed to support maximum independence for its residents, was made possible, in part, by past and present Fidelity House donors. Proceeds from our 40th aniversary events  help Fidelity House to fund homes, programs and services throughout the Merrimack Valley region for more than 600 children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.  Because of the support and commitment of friends like you, we continue to grow and thrive along with the individuals we serve.  Since 1971 our goals have remained the same: to empower individuals with disabilities to live a full rich life–as integral parts of a family, a home and a community.

Your support will also help provide recreational opportunities for both children and adults: our 40th anniversary picnic, trips to ball games, the movies, the beach, hiking and more. As Larry, one of our newest residents stated recently: “Before I moved to Fidelity House I watched a lot of tv, but now I’m too busy; we’re always having fun doing something else!”

Please help us provide opportunities for individuals like Larry, and contribute to our 40th anniversary and golf tournament.  Become a sponsor, make up a foursome, or donate a gift certificate from your favorite restaurant. All donations and all players are welcome! Together we can make a difference!

Resident Adam (Center) with his father and brother

Recently we celebrated the opening of a brand new home in Haverhill. Its new residents, George, America, Adam and Carmen, gathered with family, friends, and staff for a lovely afternoon of laughter, refreshments and tours to celebrate their beautiful new home located at the end of a lovely cul-de-sac in a tree lined rural neighborhood. The light filled home features a large, modern and open plan, with four bedrooms, a cozy den, a sunroom, and a large open kitchen/dining area with adjacent living room. It is fully accessible and features state of the art adaptations for the comfort and safety of each of its new residents. It was a warm welcome to the start of a new life.
